What was Corbit’s Charge?
June 29, 1863 during the Gettysburg Campaign an important cavalry battle unfolded in the streets of Westminster between a handful of untested troopers from the 1st Delaware Cavalry and Gen. J.E.B. Stuart’s battle-hardened veteran Cavalrymen. One eyewitness recalled the Delaware Boys led by Capt. Charles Corbit “fought with an almost suicidal bravery”. Stuart being delayed at Westminster by this encounter was crucial. This became a major factor in his failure to reach Gettysburg battlefield until late in the second day of fighting there to provide his invaluable reconnaissance for Gen. Robert E. Lee. Historians share the opinion that CORBIT’S CHARGE helped to alter the outcome of the decisive battle of the Civil War at Gettysburg.
